2.A person who follows a janāzah (funeral); if he dies while following it he will be guaranteed (Paradise) by Allāh

3.A person who visits a sick person; if he dies while doing that he will be guaranteed (Paradise) by Allāh

4.A person who performs ablution and performs it well, then leaves (home) to pray in the masjid; if he dies in that state he will be guaranteed (Paradise) by Allāh

5.A person who goes to a (Muslim) ruler for no purpose other than to support him (upon the truth) and honour him; if he dies in that state he will be guaranteed (Paradise) by Allāh

“O son of Ādam! How can you escape Me when I created you from the like of this (spit), then I shaped you (in your mother’s womb) and proportioned you (in the best shape and figure). You walk with two garments on, thumping (with arrogance) upon the earth, you accumulate wealth and withhold from spending it, until your soul reaches the throat (at the point of death) and then you say, “I will give in charity now”, but how will that charity benefit and avail you?!””

And he صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

“The one who sits in the masjid is of three types, a brother you benefit from, or you hear a statement of wisdom, or expecting the mercy of Allāh.”

[Recorded by Ahmad 2/418,Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.3401]

Al-‘Allāmah Muhammad ‘Abdus Salām al-Mubārakfūree (d.1414AH) رحمه الله said in his explanation of the above du’ā.

Meaning, do not let us be overcome by the Kuffār and oppressors, or do not place in authority over us oppressive rulers, for the oppressor is not merciful to his subjects.

It has also been said that the meaning is the angels of punishment in the grave and the Hell-Fire.

[Mir’āt al-Mafāteeh sharh Mishkāt al-Masābeeh, vol.10, pg.252, Madārul-Qabas print, 1st edition]

Al- ‘Allāmah Muhammad bin Sālih al-‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله mentioned,

The best of the people are those who initiate the greeting of Salām and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم who is the most noble of all creation, would initiate the Salām to whomever he met. So be eager to be the one who initiates the Salām before your companion, even if he is younger than you, because the best of the people are those who initiate giving the Salām and the one who is most deserving of Allāh’s mercy is the one who initiates the Salām. So would you like to be the most deserving of Allāh’s mercy? We all like that, so initiate giving Salām to the people.

[Sharh Riyādus-Saaliheen, vol.4, pg.408]

[Saheeh al-Bukhārī no.37]

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Sālih al-‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله in his explanation of the above hadeeth mentioned,

“That a person doesn’t establish (the Fasting) because it is a habitual or customary practice, or due to his people establishing it (so he does it following them), rather he establishes it out of sincerity of faith in Allāh, The Mighty and Majestic and having (certain) faith in what He has promised of reward (for the Fasting).”

[Fath zī Al-Jalālee wal-Ikrām bi sharh Buloog al-Maram, vol.7, pg.479]

A man came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said,

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

“From among the truthful and martyrs.”

[Ibn Mājah, An-Nasāee, and others, Saheeh At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb no.1083]

At-Teebee رحمه الله mentioned,

“If the fasting person does not fast out of hoping for the reward of Allāh, or does not keep away from evil deeds from indecent speech, lying, backbiting or that which is similar to it from the prohibited affairs, then he does not attain (from his fasting) except hunger and thirst.”

((Receives nothing from his standing except tiredness))

Shaykh Muhammad ‘Alī Jānabāz رحمه الله mentioned regarding the above,

“Meaning, he has no reward due to the absence of sincerity, or due to no attentiveness and presence of mind (during his standing in the night Prayer).”

[Summarised from Injāz al-Hājah sharh Sunan ibn Mājah, vol.4, pg.491, Dār an-Noor print, Islamabad]

Allāh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

“When the people of Paradise enter it, a caller will announce:

“Indeed, you are promised now to live forever and never die, to be healthy and never be sick, to be youthful and never age, and to be happy and never be sad.”[Saheeh Muslim no.2837]

Allāh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

A man came to the Prophet of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and said,

“Verily, so and so prays during the night (tahjaahud), but in the morning he steals.”

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“Verily that which he does (the night Prayer) will prevent and deter him (from stealing).”

[Narrated by Ahmad, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth al-Saheehah no.3482]

Shaykhul Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) mentioned,

“If a person falls into a sin it is due to a shortcoming and deficiency in his worship of Allāh, the Most High.”

[Jaam’i al-Masāil, vol.9, pg.173, Dār ‘Aalam al-Fawāid print, 1st edition]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“Whatever you dislike the people see you doing (from acts of disobedience), then do not do it when you are alone.”

 [Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.1055]

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) entered upon a young man while he was dying and said to him,

“How do you (i.e. your heart) feel?”

He said,

“By Allāh, O Messenger of Allāh, verily I hope in Allāh’s mercy and I fear due to my sins.”

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“These two (hope and fear) do not come together in a worshipper’s heart at a time such as this (i.e.point of death), except Allāh will grant him what he hopes for (the forgiveness of Allāh) and make him safe from what he fears (the punishment of Allāh).”

[At-Tirmidhī, no.983, declared hasan by Albānī]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“Two eyes will never be touched by the Hell-Fire; an eye which weeps out of the fear of Allāh and an eye which spends the night guarding in the Path of Allāh.”

[Abū Dāwood, At-Tabarānee in al-Awsat, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.151]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) mentioned that from the signs of the Last Hour is that time will pass quickly.

[Saheeh Al-Bukhārī, no.1036]

Shaykh ‘Abdul ‘Azeez bin Bāz (رحمه الله) mentioned,

“The closest explanation of time passing quickly as is mentioned in the hadeeth is what has occurred in our time, where the (time) to travel between cities and provinces has been made shorter and it takes less time to travel between them (than before) due to the invention of aeroplanes and cars and (the various means) of broadcasting (for news and information to spread quicker) and the like of that and Allāh knows best.”

[T’aleeq Fath Al-Bārī bī sharh Saheeh Al-Bukhārī, vol.3, pgs.392-393, Dār Taybah print, 3rd edition]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“The Hour (Last Day) will not be established until time passes quickly, when the year will be like a month, a month like a week, a week like a day, a day like an hour and an hour will be like the flicker of a flame.”

[Sunan at-Tirmidhī no.2332, declared authentic by Imām Albānee]

At-Touribishtī (d.661AH) رحمه الله mentioned,

“This is understood to mean that there will be little blessing in time and its benefits will diminish in every place, or that due to people having so many concerns with calamities and hardships and their hearts will be so occupied with great trials and tribulations, that they will not realise how quickly the days and the nights go by.”

[Tuhfathul-Ahwazee bī sharh Jaam’ī At-Tirmidhī, vol.12, pg.321, Resalah Publishers, first edition]

“Be acquainted with Allāh (i.e. worship Him and be obedient to Him) in prosperity and He will know you (by way of His support and aid) in hardship.” [Saheeh al-Jaam’i, no.2961]

Shaykh Muhammad bin Sālih al-‘Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) mentioned,

“And His (ﷺ) statement, “…in times of ease and prosperity…”, refers to ease and prosperity in your life, such as when you are in a good state of health, wealth, in a state of safety and security and whatever is similar to that.

The statement “…Allāh will know you…”, meaning a specific and special acquaintance (that Allāh will support and aid you).

And the statement “…in times of difficulty…”, meaning when you are in a state of difficulty, Allāh will be with you (supporting and aiding you) when you are ill, in times of poverty, when you are in a state of fear, and most importantly He will support and aid you at the time of death, for He will keep you firm and guide you to that which is right, because the most difficult time a person will experience will be at the time of death. So worship and be obedient to Allāh in times of ease and prosperity and He will support and aid you in times of difficulty.”

[شرح الأربعين النووية, ص.244]

Allāh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

“Stay away from the harām (prohibited things) and you will be from the most devout (pious) of the people, be pleased and content with what Allāh has apportioned for you (from provision, etc) and you will be the richest (content) of the people, treat your neighbour well and you will be a believer, love for the people what you love for yourself and you will be a Muslim and do not laugh excessively, for indeed excessive laughing kills the heart.”

 [Reported by Ahmad in Musnad, Sunan At-Tirmidhī , Al-Bayhaqī in Shu’ab al-Eemān, Saheeh al-Jaami’ no.100]

“A man who remembers Allāh in private and his eyes well up with tears.” [Sahīh Al-Bukhārī]

Hāfiz ibn Rajab رحمه الله stated regarding the above,

“This is a man who fears Allāh in secret, he is conscious of Allāh when he is alone, and the best of deeds is to fear Allāh in secret and openly. And the fear of Allāh when alone emanates from strong ēmaan (faith), and striving against the soul and desires. For desires allure a person to sins when alone, for this reason it was said; “from the rarest of things is the fear of Allāh in secret.”

“The remembrance of Allāh includes remembering the greatness of Allāh, His seizing (of the evil doers), His requital (for sins) and His punishment, and the crying that emanates from this is the crying of fear of Allāh.

And remembrance of Allāh also consists of remembering the beauty of Allāh (by way of His beautiful names and lofty attributes), His perfection, His kindness, His benevolence, His miracles (which He bestows upon) His allies with various types of kindness and benevolence, and especially seeing Him in Paradise. The crying that stems from this is the weeping of yearning and longing to meet Allāh.

And this also includes, a man who remembers that Allāh is with him (by way of His knowledge, sight and hearing) wherever he is, so he remembers Allāh encompasses and is close to him (by way of His knowledge, hearing, seeing, power etc), and observes him wherever he is, so he cries out of shyness of Him.”

[Fath Al-Baarī fee sharh Sahīh Al-Bukhārī, vol.4, pg.50, Dār ibn Al-Jawzī print, 1st edition]

Allāh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

“Do not be amazed by anyone’s deeds, until you see what (action) his life will end with. For indeed a person may perform righteous deeds for a period of time in his life, or for a while in his life, which if he were to die upon he would enter Paradise, but then he changes (deviates) and does an evil deed.

And indeed a servant may do evil deeds for a period of time in his life, which if he were to die upon he would enter the Fire, but then he changes and peforms righteous deeds. And if Allāh intends good for a servant He uses him before his death by giving him the success to carry out righteous deeds, then He takes his soul whilst he is upon that state.”

[Recorded by Ahmad, Ibn Abī ‘Aasim in Sunnah, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.1334]

Allāh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

“The major sins are; to associate partners with Allāh in worship (Shirk), to despair of the relief from Allāh (from difficulty) and to lose hope in the mercy of Allāh.”

[Recorded by Al-Bazzār, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.2051]

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said,

“A kind and good word is an act of charity.”

[Saheeh al-Bukhārī, hadeeth no.2989]

Ibn Battāl رحمه الله mentioned,

“The reason why the good word is a sadaqah (charity) is because giving wealth (in charity) brings joy and happiness to the heart of the person who is given it and removes that which may be in his heart (i.e.hatred, rancour, envy, etc) and such does the good speech (it brings about joy and happiness); so they are similar from this aspect.”

[Fath al-Bārī bī sharh Saheeh al-Bukhārī of Ibn Hajr, vol.13, pg.571, Dār Taybah print, 3rd edition, The Book Of Good Manners, Chapter: Good and Pleasant Speech, hadeeth no.6023]

[Al-Haakim in Al-Mustadrak, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah, under hadeeth no.365, vol.1, 2nd section, pgs.706-707]

A man said to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم,

“O Messenger of Allāh, advise me.”

Allāh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

“I advise you that you are shy in front of Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, just as you would be shy in front of a righteous man from amongst your people.”

[Recorded by Ahmad in Az-Zuhd pg.46 and others, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.741]

Ibn Jareer رحمه الله said regarding the above hadeeth,

“This is a profound admonishment with the clearest indication, in the most concise format and with utmost clarity. For there is no one from amongst the sinners except that he feels shy to do a bad deed in front of those who are righteous and virtuous, lest they see him doing it. And Allāh sees all the actions of His creation, so when the servant (of Allāh) is shy in front of his Lord as he is shy in the front of a righteous man amongst his people, he will keep away from sins, in open and in secret. So, what great and eloquent advice and a comprehensive admonishment this is.”

[Faydul-Qadeer sharh al-Jaam’i as-Sagheer, vol.3, pg.74, Dār al-M’arifah print, 2nd edition]

 [At-Tabarānī in Al-Awsat, Silsilah Al-Ahadeeth As-Saheehah, no.1388]

Allāh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said,

“It was ordered that a slave from the slaves of Allāh be whipped in his grave one hundred lashes, so he kept asking and supplicating until it was reduced to one lash; so he was whipped once and his grave became filled with fire all around him. When (the punishment) was stopped and he awoke he said,

“What did you whip me for?”

They (angels) said,

“You (intentionally) prayed one Prayer without wudhu and you passed by someone who was oppressed and you did not help him.”

[At-Tahawī in Mushkil Al-Aathar, As-Silsilah As-Saheehah, no.2774]

[Tirmidhī no.3682, declared saheeh by Imām Albānee]

Imām ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله mentioned,

“The adulterers will be in the oven of Hell* naked, because they took off the clothing of eemān (faith) and the oven of desire which was burning in their hearts will turn into a real oven burning with fire.”

*The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saw people being punished in a baking oven and was informed by the Angels that they were the adulterers. [Hadeeth in Saheeh Al-Bukhārī, no.1386]

[Ibn Mājah no.8, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.2442]

Shaykh ‘Abdul Muhsin al-‘Abbād حفظه الله said regarding the above hadeeth,

“That Allāh will place in every time those who will establish and uphold this Religion and keep others firm upon it. So they will be established and upright themselves (upon the Religion) and invite others to it and they will be patient upon what they receive (from harm) whilst treading this path (in adhering to the Religion). They will be given success and enlightenment with adherence to the obedience of Allāh and His Messenger عليه الصلاةوالسلام, and in being firm upon this Religion and calling and inviting others to it.”

[Sharh Kitāb as-Sunnah min Sunnah ibn Mājah, pgs.64-65, Dār al-Imām al-Bukhārī print, slightly summarised]

From the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wasallam), from that which he narrates from His Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, that He said,

[Tuhfatul Al-Ahwadhee vol.7, pg.310, Dār Al-Hadeeth Cairo print, 1st edition]

Jābir (رضي الله عنهما) narrates that the Prophet (ﷺ) visited Umm Sa’ib while she was ill. He asked her,

“Why are you shivering?”

She replied,

“Because of the fever, may Allāh not bless it.”

The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

“Do not curse fever, for it removes the sins of the children of Ādam, just as a furnace removes impurities from iron.”

[Saheeh Muslim no.2575]

Allaah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said,

“Indeed Allāh has specified certain people to whom He bestows blessings upon so they may benefit the servants of Allāh. He continues to bestow those blessings upon them so long as they continue to benefit the people with them. But once they cease to benefit the people with those blessings He removes it from them and bestows it on other than them.”

Imām ‘Abdul ‘Azeez bin Bāz (رحمه الله) mentioned,

“There comes in some ahadeeth* that which indicates that sudden death will increase towards the end of time and it is the taking (of the soul) in anger (from Allāh) in relation to the evildoer and it is a relief for the believer, who may be struck by sudden death, as a result of a cardiac arrest or other than that and it will be a relief for him and a blessing from Allāh upon him, because he was upright and prepared for death and was striving in goodness, so he is taken all of a sudden whilst he is upon a good state, upon goodness and righteous actions and therefore he is relieved from the agonies, exhaustion and hardships of death.

It may also happen to evildoers, who are taken in anger (from Allāh upon them), they are taken by surprise whilst being in the worst state, we ask Allāh for wellbeing, we seek refuge with Allāh.”

Part 2 of 2

Question: Is the one who dies a sudden death considered to be a martyr or not?

Answered by Imām Muhammad Nāsir ud-Deen Albānee (رحمه الله)

A martyr?! Inshā-Allāh hopefully it is not a death of sorrow, meaning that the matter differs from person to person. Sudden death in relation to the one who is prepared and ready to meet Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic and has fulfilled the rights due on him, whether they are from the rights of Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic such as the Prayer and the Fasting, or the rights of the slaves of Allāh such as Zakāt and charity and the like of that, if he has fulfilled all the obligations and there is no debt upon him and dies suddenly, then there is no harm in that.

However, if he is a sinner or an evildoer, or he is negligent (in the religion) and dies a sudden death, then this is a death of sorrow and deep regret, because he was not prepared for such a death, that is why the Muslim must always be prepared for this hour (of death), which might come suddenly and it is why the Prophet (عليه الصلاة والسلام) said,

“Whoever loves to meet Allāh, Allāh (also) loves to meet him, and whoever hates to meet Allāh, Allāh (too) hates to meet him.” [Saheeh Muslim, hadeeth no.157]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) stated,

“The best of deeds is to bring happiness to your believing brother, or to pay off his debt, or to feed him bread.”

[Al-Asbahānī in At-Targheeb, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.2715]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) stated,

“Verily from the greatest of sins in the sight of Allāh is:

  • a man who marries a woman and when he has fulfilled his needs (i.e. had marital relations with her), he divorces her and flees with her mahr (dowry),
  • a man who employs a man and runs off with his wage,
  • and a person who kills an animal needlessly.”

 [Recorded by al-Hākim, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.999]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“Whoever misses the ‘Asr prayer (intentionally), it is as if he has lost his family and wealth.” [Saheeh al-Bukhārī]

Shaykh Muhammad bin Sālih al-Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) mentioned regarding this hadeeth,

“If a person was to lose his family and wealth, you would find people coming to him in droves to offer him condolences and to console him. However, the one who abandons the ‘Asr prayer, who says to him,

“May you be consoled for abandoning the ‘Asr Prayer?”

Few people pay attention to this, how tremendous is this affair (of leaving the ‘Asr prayer) and how heavy is the loss!

[Jalasāt Ramadānīyah, vol.10, pg.10]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to one of his Companions who desired to be a martyr,

“If you are truthful with Allāh, Allāh will be truthful with you (fulfill your wish).”

The man was martyred during a battle and the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

“He was truthful with Allāh and Allāh was truthful with him.” [Saheeh Sunan An-Nasāee no.1953]

Shaykh Muhammad ‘Ādam al-Ethiopī (رحمه الله) mentioned in his explanation of this hadeeth,

“If you are truthful and sincere in what you say and you make a covenant with Allāh, the Most High, Allāh will reward you for your truthfulness by giving you what you desired and aspired for.”

Allāh’s Messenger Muhammad (may Allāh honour him and grant him peace) stated,

“This matter (the religion of Islām) will certainly reach every place touched by the night and the day (every corner of the earth). And Allāh will not leave a mudhouse, nor a house (made from) fur*, except that He will cause this religion to enter it, with which the honourable will be honoured, and the despicable will be disgraced. An honouring with which Allāh will honour Islām, and a disgrace with which Allāh will disgrace disbelief.”

* in that time, tents/homes were built using camel fur.

[Al-Hākim, Saheeh Ibn Hibbān, and others, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.3]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“Spend O Bilāl (from your wealth), and do not fear any decrease (in provision) from the Owner of the Throne.”

[Recorded by At-Tabarānee in Al-M’ujam al-Kabeer, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.2661]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) mentioned,

“No one’s wealth has benefitted us as much as the wealth of Abu Bakr (as-Siddeeq).”

[Musnad ibn Rāhaway, Ahmad, see Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no.2718]

‘Aa’ishah (رضي الله عنها) narrated that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) commanded with the building of masājid (mosques) in neighbourhoods, and that they be kept clean and scented.

[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, no.594, declared authentic by Imām Albānee]

‘Abdullāh Ibn ‘Amr (رضي الله عنهما) narrates that Allāh’s Messenger (ﷺ) said,

“The Hour (Day of Judgement) will not be established until people will fornicate on the road just as donkeys fornicate.”

I (‘Abdullāh) said:

“Is that really going to occur?”

He (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

“Yes, indeed it will surely happen.”

[Reported by al-Bazzār in Musnad, Al-Hākim, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth al-Saheehah no.481]

Allāh’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said,

There are three characteristics, whoever possesses them will find and taste the sweetness of eemān:

-That Allāh, The Mighty and Majestic and His Messenger are more beloved to him than everything else;

-That he loves and hates for the sake of Allāh;

-That he fall into a huge fire is dearer to him than to associate anything with Allāh in worship.

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would say (part of a long supplication) every morning and evening:

اللَّهُمَّ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَاتِي، وَآمِنْ رَوْعَاتِي

“…O Allāh conceal my faults and shortcomings, and keep me safe from that which I fear.”

[Abū Dāwood, no.5074, declared saheeh by Imām Albānī]

Allāh’s Messenger (ﷺ) stated,

“Be acquainted with Allāh (i.e. worship Him and be obedient to Him) in prosperity and He will know you (by way of His support and aid) in hardship.” [Saheeh al-Jaami’, no.2961]

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (رحمه الله) mentioned,

“And His (ﷺ) statement, “…in times of ease and prosperity…“, refers to ease and prosperity in your life, such as when you are in a good state of health, wealth, in a state of safety and security and whatever is similar to that.

The statement “…Allāh will know you…“, meaning a specific and special acquaintance (that Allāh will support and aid you).

And the statement “…in times of difficulty…“, meaning when you are in a state of difficulty, Allāh will be with you (supporting and aiding you) when you are ill, in times of poverty, when you are in a state of fear, and most importantly He will support and aid you at the time of death, for He will keep you firm and guide you to that which is right, because the most difficult time a person will experience will be at the time of death. So if you worship and be obedient to Allāh in times of ease and prosperity, He will support and aid you in times of difficulty.”

[Musnad Ahmad, Abū Nu’aym in al-Hilyah, Ibn ‘Asaakir in at-Taareekh, Silsilah al-Ahadeeth as-Saheehah, no.2009]
